These trips include cross-country or international moves, weddings, and vacations.

She also volunteers on an international committee which is working to make airports more accessible and friendly towards seniors and people with hidden disabilities.

Jan Dougherty, MS, RN, FAAN

President of TravALZ, LLC

Older Adult/Dementia Care Expert

Jan Dougherty, MS, RN, FAAN has dedicated her professional career to supporting people living with dementia and their family caregivers. Over the past 25 years, she has created several award-winning dementia programs being used throughout the US. As the former director of the Banner Alzheimer’s Institute Family and Community Services program, Jan heard repeatedly from newly diagnosed patients with Alzheimer’s disease (and their families) their continued desire to travel and stay connected to family and friends. Sadly, those without added planning and support often experienced difficulties leading to the end of travel.

Jan wanted to see the end of unsuccessful travel and visits for people living with dementia so she authored the first comprehensive book on travel and dementia titled, “Travel Well with Dementia: Essential Tips to Enjoy the Journey.” People living with dementia, family caregivers, health and social service professionals have praised for this book for promoting successful travel and visits for all involved. In the past two years she has provided numerous seminars, webinars and training to promote successful dementia-related travel. Having championed bringing Dementia Friendly Communities to Arizona, Jan she has been working with PHX Sky Harbor Airport to become dementia friendly through a series of trainings to volunteers and staff. Thanks to help from Jan, PHX Sky Harbor is the first US airport to offer caregivers workshops on how to execute successful air travel.

Jan combines her own love for travel with her professional passion to help people living with dementia to live well and stay connected. Certified Senior TravALZ Companions provides the opportunity to expand the ability for older adults, people living with dementia, and family caregivers to engage a competent and compassionate travel companion.
